Job Description:

People Incorporated is a nonprofit organization that serves people with mental illness in the Minneapolis and Saint Paul metro area. The Huss Center for Recovery is an innovative treatment program for adult men and women with co-occurring chemical dependency issues and mental illness. The program offers a full spectrum of services including inpatient, intensive outpatient, continuing care and concerned persons group. Our person-centered treatment services provide an integrated, interdisciplinary approach that links psychological, biological, and social factors to assist people in the process of recovery.

We are offering an INTERNSHIP to students enrolled in Master's degree programs that are focused on dual licensure in Alcohol and Drug Counseling and another area of mental health counseling like social work, counseling psychology, integrated behavioral health, etc. This is an unpaid internship that involves a collaboration between the school, the student and the supervisor at Huss.

Internship opportunities are available at Huss Center for Recovery (Residential and Outpatient), Hewitt Women's Program (Residential and Outpatient) and new IOP programs scheduled to open this Spring.


The primary objective of the internship is to observe and then practice the twelve core functional skills required of an Alcohol and Drug Counselor and to observe and then practice the core responsibilities for mental health practitioners. Some experiences will include:
Observing Alcohol & Drug Counselors and Mental Health Practitioners as they provide direct clinical support to clients
Working with a diverse population and participating on a multi-disciplinary team that provides individual and group counseling
Learning how to prepare reports and documentation for reimbursement of services
Observing and conducting diagnostic assessments, learning differential diagnostic skills
Co-facilitating psycho-educational groups

Fall August-December, April 15th - May 15th
Spring January-May, Sept 15th - Oct 15th
Summer June-August, Feb 15th - March 15th

Typical schedules occur Sunday Saturday, 8:00am 4:30pm or 5:00pm - 10:00pm. Scheduling is flexible and is based upon the needs of the student and availability of site supervisors.

Attend New Hire Orientation
Respect and follow HIPAA and Vulnerable Adult reporting procedures
Attend weekly supervision meetings with academic approved supervisor
Incorporate constructive feedback into daily practice
Be open to learning about the complexities and stigma associated with mental illness and addiction
Be able to identify how certain attitudes, beliefs and values of the practitioner may affect service delivery
Attend and participate in group supervision meetings, trainings, and staff meetings

Required qualifications:
Current enrollment in an accredited Master's degree program that combines Alcohol & Drug Counseling with another area of mental health counseling like social work, counseling psychology, integrated behavioral health, etc.
Ability to communicate observations, questions, and/or concerns to task supervisor, site supervisor, and field instructor as needed
